Ingredients

  • 1 pod anise
  • 4 tbsp coconut flakes
  • 7 clove garlic - 4 cl
  • 2 Onions
  • 2 tbsp Mint leaves
  • 1 cup Moth Beans
  • 1 tbsp Kashmiri red chili powder
  • 2 Fennel Seeds
  • 5 Clove
  • 2 tbsp Fennel seeds
  • 1 tbsp Misri (Jaggery/Sugar)
  • 0.5 Tomato
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 6 tbsp Olive Oil

Instructions

    For our Misal Pav Recipe, we will need 1 cup of Moth Beans which has been soaked in water overnight.

    Add the Moth Beans in a pressure cooker.

    Add 3 cups of water to the mixture.

    Add 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp turmeric to the mixture and give the mixture a quick mix.

    Cover the pressure cooker with a lid and cook till you get whistles.

    While the Moth Beans are being cooked, we will prepare our Misal Pav paste. For this we will need 2 tbsp coriander seeds, 5 cloves, 2 cardamon, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 star anise, 1 tbsp kashmiri red chilly powder, 4 tbsp dried grated coconut flakes, 6-7 garlic cloves, 1 tsp black pepper seeds and a cinnamon stick

    Add the all the spices to the low hot pan. Roast everything for a couple of minutes.

    Add the garlic cloves the spices.

    Add the chilly powder and coconut flakes the mixture.

    Roast everything for a 2-3 minutes on low flame. After that let the mixture cool down.

    Add the mixture to a blender.

    Add some cilantro leaves, 1/2 tsp salt and some water to the mixture.

    Blend everything to form a fine paste. Keep this paste aside. We will use it in some time.

    Meanwhile the Moth Beans are boiled.

    Check that the Moth Beans are cooked correctly.

    Take 5-6 tbsp of oil in medium hot pan.

    Add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds to it.

    Add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds to it.

    Mix everything together, then add few curry leaves to the mixture.

    Add 2 chopped Onion to the mixture.

    Mix everything together and start cooking it.

    Cook everything till the Onion turns golden brown.

    Add 1 medium sized tomatoes to the mixture

    Cook everything together till the tomatoes become soft and mushy.

    Time to add our Paste to the mixture.

    Cook everything together till all the water evaporates

    Add the Moth Bean Mixture to the pan and start cooking everything together. Your Misal Pav is almost ready. Just a few more steps.

    Add 1 tsp salt the mixture. You can check before adding more salt the mixture as we had added salt in the previous steps as well.

    Add 1 tbsp jaggery to the mixture. This step is completely optional depending on your taste and how spicy you want your Misal Pav to be.

    Add chopped Coriander leaves to the mixture.

    Give everything a good mix. Check the consistency of the Misal Pav. You don't want it be very thick. Also you might reduce the amount of chillies you add to it if you don't want your Misal Pav to be very spicy but this recipe is generally a bit spicy.
