Matar Paneer Recipe | Tomato Cottage Cheese Curry

Matar Paneer is eaten all over India. Matar which means peas and paneer is cottage cheese. This is a traditional matar paneer recipe made with tomatoes, Peas, onion and of course paneer or cottage cheese.

Ingredients

  • 200 gms Paneer - 1 piece
  • 5 tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 Onions
  • 1/2 tsp Garam masala
  • 2 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 250 gms Green peas
  • 2 tsp Cumin powder
  • 2 Dry red chillies
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 tbsp Cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1.5 tsp coriander powder

Instructions

    Take 2 tbsp oil in pan. Cut 200 gms paneer (Cottage Cheese) in small cubes and fry them from all sides.

    Add the fried paneer cubes immediately in cold salt water. This will help the paneer cubes remain soft or else they will turn hard.

    Now take the remaining oil we used to fry the paneer cubes.

    Add 2 small chopped onions, 4-5 garlic cloves and 2-3 pieces of ginger in it and cook them till the onions turn light brown or golden.

    Add 1 medium size diced tomato to the mixture and cook them together. Add 1 tsp salt the mixture so that tomatoes cook fast.

    Cook everything together till the tomatoes turn mushy.

    Get the mixture out of the pan. Let it cool down. Now add it to blender.

    Add 2-3 tbsp of water to the mixture and blend the mixture till it becomes a fine paste. Keep this aside.

    Take 1.5 tsp turmeric a small bowl.

    Add 2 tsp chili powder to it

    Add 2 tsp coriander (dhanya) powder to it

    Add 2 tbsp water to the mixture and mix everything together to turn it into a fine paste. Keep this mixture aside.

    Take 2 tbsp oil in a hot pan and let the oil get hot.

    Add 2 bay leaves, 2 dried red chilies, 1 tbsp cumin (jeera) seeds to it and fry everything together for a minute.

    After the cumin seeds turn brown , lower the flame and add the spice mixture that we created to it.

    Cook everything together for a couple of minutes.

    Turn the flame to medium and add the onion tomato mixture that we created to it and cook everything together.

    After a few minutes, the color of the mixture will change.

    Add 250 gms of peas to the mixture and mix everything together and cook it for a couple of minutes.

    Add 2 cups water to the mixture and let it cook for a few minutes till the curry comes to boil.

    Add the paneer cubes we prepared to the curry. Add 1 tsp salt the curry.

    Cover the curry with a lid and let it cook for about 10 minutes.

    Remove the lid. Your curry is almost ready

    Add 1/2 tsp garam masala to the curry.

    Add finely chopped coriander leaves to curry and mix it well.

    Your curry is ready. Serve it hot with chapati or bread. Enjoy!!
